Vodafone reveals existence of secret wires that allow state surveillance

 Vodafone,
 one of the world's largest mobile phone groups, has revealed the 
existence of secret wires that allow government agencies to listen to 
all conversations on its networks, saying they are widely used in some 
of the 29 countries in which it operates in Europe and beyond. 
 
The company has broken its silence on government surveillance
 in order to push back against the increasingly widespread use of phone 
and broadband networks to spy on citizens, and will publish its first 
Law Enforcement Disclosure Report on Friday . At 40,000 words, it is the
 most comprehensive survey yet of how governments monitor the 
conversations and whereabouts of their people. 
 
The company said 
wires had been connected directly to its network and those of other 
telecoms groups, allowing agencies to listen to or record live 
conversations and, in certain cases, track the whereabouts of a 
customer. Privacy campaigners said the revelations were a "nightmare scenario" that confirmed their worst fears on the extent of snooping. 
 
In
 Albania, Egypt, Hungary, India, Malta, Qatar, Romania, South Africa and
 Turkey, it is unlawful to disclose any information related to 
wiretapping or interception of the content of phone calls and messages 
including whether such capabilities exist. 
 
"For governments to 
access phone calls at the flick of a switch is unprecedented and 
terrifying," said the Liberty director, Shami Chakrabarti. "[Edward] 
Snowden revealed the internet was already treated as fair game. Bluster 
that all is well is wearing pretty thin – our analogue laws need a 
digital overhaul." 
 
In about six of the countries in which Vodafone
 operates, the law either obliges telecoms operators to install direct 
access pipes, or allows governments to do so. The company, which owns 
mobile and fixed broadband networks, including the former Cable & 
Wireless business, has not named the countries involved because certain 
regimes could retaliate by imprisoning its staff.

Direct-access systems do not require warrants, and companies have no 
information about the identity or the number of customers targeted. Mass
 surveillance can happen on any telecoms network without agencies having
 to justify their intrusion to the companies involved. 
 
Industry 
sources say that in some cases, the direct-access wire, or pipe, is 
essentially equipment in a locked room in a network's central data 
centre or in one of its local exchanges or "switches". 
 
The staff 
working in that room can be employed by the telecoms firm, but have 
state security clearance and are usually unable to discuss any aspect of
 their work with the rest of the company. Vodafone says it requires all 
employees to follow its code of conduct, but secrecy means that it 
cannot always verify that they do so. 
 
Government agencies can also
 intercept traffic on its way into a data centre, combing through 
conversations before routing them on to the operator. 
 
"These are 
the nightmare scenarios that we were imagining," said Gus Hosein, 
executive director of Privacy International, which has brought legal 
action against the British government over mass surveillance. 
 
"I 
never thought the telcos [telecommunications companies] would be so 
complicit. It's a brave step by Vodafone and hopefully the other telcos 
will become more brave with disclosure, but what we need is for them to 
be braver about fighting back against the illegal requests and the laws 
themselves." 
 
Vodafone's group privacy officer, Stephen Deadman, said: "These pipes exist, the direct access model exists. 
"We
 are making a call to end direct access as a means of government 
agencies obtaining people's communication data. Without an official 
warrant, there is no external visibility. If we receive a demand we can 
push back against the agency. The fact that a government has to issue a 
piece of paper is an important constraint on how powers are used." 
 
Vodafone
 is calling for all direct-access pipes to be disconnected, and for the 
laws that make them legal to be amended. It says governments should 
"discourage agencies and authorities from seeking direct access to an 
operator's communications infrastructure without a lawful mandate". 
 
All
 states should publish annual data on the number of warrants issued, the
 company argues. There are two types – those for the content of calls 
and messages, and those for the metadata, which can cover the location 
of a target's device, the times and dates of communications, and the 
people with whom they communicated. 
 
For brevity, the Guardian has 
also used the term metadata to cover warrants for customer information 
such as name and address. The information published in our table covers 
2013 or the most recent year available. 
 A single warrant can target 
hundreds of individuals and devices, and several warrants can target 
just one individual. Governments count warrants in different ways and 
New Zealand, for example, excludes those concerning national security. 
While software companies like Apple and Microsoft have jumped to publish
 the number of warrants they receive since the activities of America's NSA and Britain's GCHQ came to light, telecoms companies, which need government licences to operate, have been slower to respond. 
 
In America, Verizon and AT&T have published data, but only on their domestic operations. Deutsche Telekom in Germany and Telstra in Australia have also broken ground at home. Vodafone is the first to produce a global survey. 
 
It
 shows that Malta is one of the most spied on nations in Europe. The 
former British protectorate has a tiny population of 420,000, but last 
year Vodafone alone processed 3,773 requests for metadata. 
 
In 
Italy, where the mafia's presence requires a high level of police 
intrusion, Vodafone received 606,000 metadata requests, more than any 
other country in which it runs networks. The number of warrants across 
all operators is potentially many times that number, but the government 
does not publish a national figure for metadata. 
 
Italy's 
parliament does disclose content warrants, however, and it issued 
141,000 in 2012, compared with just 2,760 in the United Kingdom. In 
contrast to the UK, terrorism concerns mean Ireland does not allow any 
information on the number of content warrants to be made public. 
  
Spain,
 which has suffered terrorist strikes from Islamists and Basque 
separatists, allowed Vodafone to disclose that it had received over 
24,000 content warrants. Agencies in the Czech Republic made nearly 
8,000 content requests from the network. After Italy, the Czech Republic
 is the biggest user of metadata, issuing 196,000 warrants nationally in
 the most recent year for which information has been published. 
 
Tanzania, one of several African countries in which Vodafone operates, 
made 99,000 metadata requests from the company. 
 
Peter Micek, 
policy counsel at the campaign group Access, said: "In a sector that has
 historically been quiet about how it facilitates government access to 
user data, Vodafone has for the first time shone a bright light on the 
challenges of a global telecom giant, giving users a greater 
understanding of the demands governments make of telcos. Vodafone's 
report also highlights how few governments issue any transparency 
reports, with little to no information about the number of wiretaps, 
cell site tower dumps, and other invasive surveillance practices." 
 
On
 the question of whether the UK uses direct-access pipes, Vodafone's 
Deadman said such a system would be illegal because Britain did not 
permit agencies to obtain information without a warrant. The law does, 
however, allow indiscriminate collection of information on an 
unidentified number of targets. "We need to debate how we are balancing 
the needs of law enforcement with the fundamental rights and freedoms of
 the citizens. The ideal is we get a much more informed debate going, 
and we do all of that without putting our colleagues in danger." 
 
Snowden,
 the National Security Agency whistleblower, joined Google, Reddit, 
Mozilla and other tech firms and privacy groups on Thursday to call for a
 strengthening of privacy rights online in a "Reset the net" campaign. 
  
Twelve
 months after revelations about the scale of the US government's 
surveillance programs were first published in the Guardian and the 
Washington Post, Snowden said: "One year ago, we learned that the 
internet is under surveillance, and our activities are being monitored 
to create permanent records of our private lives – no matter how 
innocent or ordinary those lives might be. Today, we can begin the work 
of effectively shutting down the collection of our online 
communications, even if the US Congress fails to do the same."

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad
 has been re-elected in a landslide, officials said on Wednesday, 
capturing another seven-year term in the middle of a bloody 
three-year-old uprising against his rule that has devastated the 
country. 
 
Syria's
 parliament speaker, Jihad Lahan, announced the final results from 
Tuesday's election, saying Assad garnered 10,319,723 votes, or 88.7%. 
Laham said Assad's two challengers, Hassan al-Nouri and Maher Hajjar, 
won 4.3% and 3.2% respectively. The supreme constitutional court put 
turnout at 73.42%. 
 
After the results were released, Damascus 
erupted into a thunderous, rolling clap of celebratory gunfire that 
appeared to include heavy weaponry. On the streets of the capital, men 
cheered and whistled. Some broke into the familiar pro-Assad chant: 
"With our souls, with our blood, we sacrifice for you, Bashar!" 
 
Assad's
 victory was always a foregone conclusion, despite the presence of other
 candidates on the ballot for the first time in decades. Voting was held
 only in government-controlled areas, excluding huge tracks of northern 
and eastern Syria that are in rebel hands. The opposition and its 
western allies, including the United States, have denounced the election
 as a farce. 
 
The win boosts Assad's support base, and provides further evidence that he has no intention of relinquishing power. 
 
For
 the first time in decades, there were multiple candidates on the 
ballot. In previous presidential elections, Assad and before him his 
father, Hafez Assad, were elected in single candidate referendums in 
which voters cast yes-no ballots. 
 
The government has sought to 
present this vote as a democratic solution to Syria's three-year 
conflict, although a win for Assad is certain to prolong the war. Much 
of northern and eastern Syria is in rebel hands, and those in the armed 
opposition show no signs of relenting in their fight to oust Assad. 
 
The
 war, which activists say has killed more than 160,000 people, has left 
the international community deeply divided, with the US and its allies 
backing the revolt against Assad, who enjoys the support of Russia and 
Iran. 
 
That division persisted in perceptions of Tuesday's vote. 
 
In
 Beirut, US secretary of state John Kerry sharply criticized the Syrian 
election, calling it "a great big zero." He said it can't be considered 
fair "because you can't have an election where millions of your people 
don't even have an ability to vote." 
 
"Nothing has changed from the
 day before the election and the day after. Nothing," Kerry said during a
 one-day visit to the Lebanese capital. "The conflict is the same, the 
terror is the same, the killing is the same." 
The European Union 
joined the US in condemning the election, saying in a statement that "it
 cannot be considered as a genuinely democratic vote." 
 
In 
Damascus, meanwhile, a delegation led by the government's chief 
international supporters said Syria's first multi-candidate presidential
 election in over four decades was transparent and free, and would pave 
the way for "stability and national agreement." 
 
The delegation of 
officials from more than 30 countries, including legislators and 
dignitaries from Iran, Russia and Venezuela, toured polling stations on 
Tuesday. In a final statement read Wednesday by Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the
 head of the Iranian parliament's committee on national security, the 
delegation blamed the US and its allies for "crimes committed against 
the Syrian people."

The US army has promised a “thorough, transparent and complete 
review” into the capture of Bowe Bergdahl, whose release from Taliban 
captivity in exchange for five Guantánamo Bay detainees is threatening a full-scale crisis for President Barack Obama's administration. 
 
 
Military
 officials, who endorsed the decision to release the five detainees in 
exchange for the 28-year-old American soldier, have so far given mixed 
messages about whether he would be disciplined for his apparent decision
 to walk away from his base five years ago. 
 
Bergdahl was captured shortly after he left the base, and spent five years in captivity before his release over the weekend. 
 
“It
 was always a high priority that every soldier deployed to Afghanistan 
would return home. We will never leave a fallen comrade behind,” the 
army’s chief of staff, general Raymond Odierno, said in a statement on 
Wednesday. 
 
“Now that Sgt Bergdahl is back and under our
 control, first and foremost we must ensure his health is taken care of 
and he is properly reintegrated. At the appropriate time, we will 
conduct a thorough, transparent and complete review of the circumstances
 surrounding his capture.” 
 
In Brussels, the defense 
secretary Chuck Hagel said it was unfair to the family of Bergdahl, a 
private who was promoted to the rank of sergeant in captivity, to jump 
to conclusions about his conduct on duty. 
 
“We don't do that in the United States,” Hagel told reporters at a meeting of Nato defense ministers. “We rely on facts.” 
 
Hagel
 added that the army review would seek to establish how Bergdahl left 
his unit and was captured by the Taliban, adding: “It's not my place as a
 former sergeant in the army to decide who's worthy of being a sergeant 
and who isn't.” 
 
On Wednesday, Bergdahl's hometown of 
Hailey, Idaho, said it had canceled plans for a celebration of the 
soldier's return, citing security concerns and a flood of negative 
attention. 
 
The row over the legality and wisdom of the deal made 
to secure Bergdahl’s release has intensified in recent days in 
Washington, where Republicans argue Obama overstepped his authority when
 he decided to release the Guantánamo prisoners, and that he has put 
American lives at risk. 
 
Much of the focus has turned to
 Bergdahl, who remains in Germany, where he is recovering from the 
ordeal, and his father, Robert Bergdahl, who has fought tirelessly for his son's release but made clear his opposition to US military aggression. 
 
Critics are describing Bergdahl as a disloyal soldier who should be 
subject to a court martial if there is evidence he deserted his post. 
 
Some
 former members of Bergdahl’s platoon have gone so far as to speculate 
that several soldiers were killed in the search that ensued after his 
disappearance in 2009 although there is <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/04/world/middleeast/can-gi-be-tied-to-6-lost-lives-facts-are-murky.html">no firm evidence</a> to confirm that is the case. 
 
Asked
 on Wednesday whether men had died in the efforts to rescue Bergdahl, 
Hagel replied: “I don't know of any circumstances or details of US 
soldiers dying as a result of efforts to get Bergdahl.” 
 
In an <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/mcchrystal-on-bergdahl---we-don-t-leave-americans-behind--that-s-unequivocal-193638795.html;_ylt=AwrSyCNbiI9TlQ4Awj3QtDMD">interview with Yahoo News </a>on
 Wednesday, retired general Stanley McChrystal, the top US commander in 
Afghanistan at the time Bergdahl disappeared, defended the efforts to 
find him and called on people to reserve judgment until the full facts 
were known. 
 
“I think we’re going to have to wait and talk to 
Sergeant Bergdahl now and get his side of the story,” McChrystal said. 
“One of the great things about America is we should not judge until we 
know the facts. And after we know the facts, then we should make a 
mature judgment on how we should handle it.” 
 
 McChrystal was also 
asked whether he would have made the same prisoner swap deal with the 
Talban. He replied: “We don’t leave Americans behind. That’s 
unequivocal.” 
 
The controversy intensified on Wednesday when the <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jun/04/taliban-releases-video-bowe-bergdahl-handed-over-us">Taliban released a video</a>
 showing the moment Bergdahl was handed over to US special forces in the
 Bati in Ali Sher district of eastern Khost province, near the Pakistani
 border. 
 
The film showed a tense exchange, and elements
 of it are likely to inflame the debate surrounding the decision to 
enter into an agreement with the Taliban, brokered via Qatar. 
 
At one point in the video, one of the US soldiers retrieving Bergdahl <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jun/04/taliban-releases-video-bowe-bergdahl-handed-over-us">shakes hands with two of his Taliban guards</a> – an image likely to irritate the White House. They are then shown waving as they return to a military helicopter.

Western leaders gathering in Brussels have sought to build on a 
successful Ukrainian presidential election to push for a settlement 
between Moscow and Kiev. 
 
At a two-day Brussels summit of the group
 of seven, which opened on Wednesday, Obama and European leaders warned 
the Kremlin of tougher economic sanctions unless Russia stopped facilitating violence in eastern Ukraine.
 "We stand ready to intensify targeted sanctions and to consider 
significant additional restrictive measures to impose further costs on 
Russia should events so require," the leaders said in a statement late 
on Wednesday. 
 
But the emphasis was on capitalising on the 
landslide victory of president-elect Petro Poroshenko to try to 
encourage direct talks with Russia. 
"We consider that we have some
 diplomatic and political possibilities to see if Russia is ready to 
engage more and stop destabilisation in Ukraine," said Herman Van 
Rompuy, the president of the European Council, who co-chaired the 
summit. 
 
Obama met Poroshenko for the first time on Wednesday in Warsaw before travelling to Brussels. 
While being highly critical of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, over Ukraine, Obama has also used his visit this week to Europe
 to emphasise the potential for rebuilding trust between Russia and the 
west, depending on Moscow's behaviour on Ukraine in coming weeks. 
 
Chancellor
 Angela Merkel of Germany also signalled there may be opportunities for a
 diplomatic opening to chart a way out of the Ukrainian crisis. 
 
Western
 officials say they have been mildly encouraged by Putin's response to 
the Ukrainian presidential election and appear inclined to give the 
Kremlin the benefit of the doubt. 
 
While Ukraine dominated 
Wednesday evening's Brussels dinner, it is also certain to loom large 
over events in France on Friday marking the 70th anniversary of the 
D-day landings. Putin is to attend and may have his first meeting with 
Obama since the Ukraine conflict turned violent in February. 
 
In 
Warsaw Obama accused the Kremlin of resorting to the "dark tactics" of 
the last century in Ukraine, and pledged to resist Russian aggression in
 eastern Europe. 
 
"The days of empire and spheres of influence are over," he said at the royal palace in Warsaw. 
"Bigger
 nations must not be allowed to bully the small, or impose their will at
 the barrel of a gun or with masked men taking over buildings. 
 
"Further
 Russian provocations will only mean more isolation and costs for 
Russia. After investing so much blood and treasure to bring Europe 
together, how can we allow the dark tactics of the 20th century to 
define this new century?" 
 
Obama invoked the anniversaries this 
week of the D-day landings in France in 1944 and the communist bloc's 
first partly free elections in Poland in 1989 as key events in the fight
 to free Europe from tyranny. 
 
He said: "We've been reminded by 
Russia's aggression in Ukraine, our free nations cannot be complacent in
 pursuit of the vision we share – a Europe that is whole and free and at
 peace. We have to work for that." 
The US leader sought to allay 
fears that the west was reluctant to commit to eastern Europe's 
security. "As allies, we have a solemn duty to defend your territorial 
integrity. And we will," he told the Poles. 
 
"We stand together, 
now and forever, for your freedom is ours. Poland will never stand 
alone. But not just Poland – Estonia will never stand alone. Latvia will
 never stand alone. Lithuania will never stand alone. 
 
Romania will never
 stand alone." 
 
In Berlin Merkel, who is to meet Putin in France on
 Friday, demanded that the Russian leader act forcefully to prevent 
violence in eastern Ukraine, and to close the borders to arms and 
paramilitaries entering Ukraine from Russia. 
 
"If this does not stop, we won't flinch from imposing more sanctions," she told the German parliament. 
 
Hosting
 the G7 summit in Brussels, Van Rompuy echoed Merkel and accused Putin 
of promoting violence in eastern Ukraine. "We call on Russia to 
contribute actively to de-escalation efforts," he said, "notably through
 the withdrawal of its troops from the border, using its leverage on the
 armed separatists in eastern Ukraine to stop their illegal actions and 
obtain their disarmament, and preventing the crossing of armed militants
 and weapons into Ukraine. 
 
"By not addressing these issues Russia is contributing to the increase of violence."

 The French president told journalists that he did not know whether 
Obama wanted to discuss the reported $10bn fine the French bank faces in
 the US for alleged sanctions busting "but me, I will speak to him about
 it". 
 
Obama v Merkel on phone-tapping: A 
Geman prosecutor is to open an investigation into allegations the US 
National Security Agency monitored Angela Merkel's mobile phone. Berlin 
and Washington are unlikely to cancel dinners over the issue. 
 
Merkel v Cameron on Jean-Claude Juncker:
 Cameron has taken the strongest stance against Juncker for EU 
Commission president – Merkel has said she supports Juncker. German 
media have since raised questions over the UK's future in the EU. 
 
Merkel v Hollande on Christine Lagarde:
 Reuters reported that Merkel asked Hollande to put forward Christine 
Lagarde, the French head of the IMF, as an alternative to Juncker. 
Socialist Hollande is said to oppose both Juncker and Lagarde. 
 
Obama v Putin on Ukraine:
 Until Russia annexed Crimea, the G8 was to meet in Sochi. Then Russia 
was expelled, the G8 became the G7 and is meeting in Brussels. Putin 
will meet Cameron, Hollande and Obama in Normandy on Friday.

The world’s tallest cricketer, Mohammad Irfan, said on 
Tuesday that he could win matches at next year’s World Cup 
single-handedly, after regaining full fitness from a hip bone injury 
which had sidelined him for six months. 
 </div>
Irfan, who is seven-feet and one-inch tall, was speaking at a training camp in Lahore following his long lay-off. 
 
“I am feeling completely fit and of course the target is to win the World Cup for Pakistan,” said Irfan, who turns 32 on Friday.

“It’s a big event, every player feels honoured to play it. In 
Australia, pitches are very bouncy and are suitable for me and obviously
 I have a height factor and I can do well. 
 
“If I manage to sustain my fitness 100%, I will be able to win matches single-handedly.” 
 
The lanky pacer was injured during the T20 series against South 
Africa in November last year in Dubai, missing Pakistan’s series against
 Sri Lanka, tour to South Africa, Asia Cup and the World Twenty20. 
 
Irfan said it was disappointing to miss six months of cricket, but said he would strive to avoid further injuries. 
“I am working hard on my fitness and I am ensuring this time that I should go a long way,” he said. 
 
Irfan broke into the national team in 2010 at the relatively late age
 of 28 but has so far played just four Tests, 27 ODIs and seven T20s. 
 
“I know I have to manage my workload and playing Tests is an added 
pressure, hence I decided to play T20 and one-dayers only. I have to get
 myself tied up for a longer run this time and will ensure that I don’t 
get dropped.” 
 
The selectors are not likely to take a chance on Irfan for their 
August tour of Sri Lanka, with the all-important series against 
Australia in the UAE in October-November a more realistic target for a 
comeback. 
 
Pakistan then play New Zealand in the UAE, and tour New Zealand for a short limited over series before the World Cup in 2015. 
 
‘Missing World Twenty20 was devastating’ 
 
The left-arm fast-bowler further added that he was devastated after 
missing out on the back-to-back events of the Asia Cup and the World 
Twenty20, but his family supported him during the tough phase.

“I was down after missing out on the World Twenty20 and Asian Cup 
simultaneously, but my family and friends stood by me during that tough 
period,” said Irfan.

The eager anticipation and speculations of the International 
Cricket Council’s (ICC) Member Boards about the Future Tours Programme 
(FTP) will be put to rest in the second week of June.

As the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI), Cricket Australia 
(CA) and the English and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) prepare to take over 
the reins of the ICC, the boards are gearing up to get a glimpse at the 
eight-year FTP in the June 11-12 meeting. 
 
“Finalisation of the FTP will take place in the ICC meeting, which 
will be held on June 11-12,” a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official 
told The Express Tribune. 
 
The ‘Big Three’ are all set to take charge of the ICC’s 
administrative and financial affairs, which will be formally approved in
 the board’s meeting to be held by the end of June. 
 
It should be mentioned here that the final picture of the FTP will be
 presented to the members, but they can only sign it after the draft 
agreement on the take-over of the ‘Big Three’ is presented for approval. 
 
The ICC board had earlier authorised drawing up the necessary 
constitutional amendments, which will be placed before the Full Council 
at the Annual Conference scheduled to take place in Melbourne at the end
 of June. 
 
The PCB has claimed that it had agreed to the ICC revamp only on the 
condition that it would get bilateral series with all members from 
2015-2023. 
 
There were reports and fears that the ongoing tug-of-war for the PCB 
chairmanship could derail the process of finalising the FTP, which holds
 immense importance as it will allow all the boards to determine the 
direction they will follow for the next eight years, as well as the 
financial gains they could receive from it. 
 
“The ICC is preparing a draft agreement for the proposed changes in 
the governing body to be approved by all members,” added the official. 
“Binding agreements will be signed after the ICC board meeting in 
Melbourne by the end of June, and the process will be concluded by

Youngsters from the Kalyana Academy became the first female 
players to lay the foundation for women’s boxing in the country as they 
competed at the Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) backed school 
tournament in Karachi’s District Central on Saturday. 
 </div>
The Inter-Classes Kalyana Boxing Tournament for girls and boys was 
more than just a regular junior event. According to the PBF officials 
and international referee Ali Akber Shah Qadri, the dream of formally 
introducing the sport for females after 15 years of planning had finally
 borne fruit. 
 
The one-day competition featured 10 girls in five bouts between the ages of 10 to 13 years in weight categories of 22-48kg. 
 
“We’ve never had female boxing in Pakistan before and this is just the beginning,” Qadri told The Express Tribune. 
 
“I dreamt of this day 15 years ago. Back then, the Islami Nazariya 
Council had dismissed this notion. I had to bear zealous opposition from
 hardliners, but today we hope that Pakistan is a different society. 
Hopefully people will accept female boxers and they can make their name 
in the sport like the women from other countries have.” 
 
During the competition, Warda Rafi defeated Ariba Rafi 2-1 while 
Noor-e-Saba outclassed Arsalah 3-0 and Zainab defeated Soniya 3-0. 
Fatima Furqan outplayed Samra 3-0 and Khatija overcame Sumera 2-1. 
 
Mohamad Ali, Arsalan and Abdul Wasay also registered wins in the boys’ category. 
 
Qadri further stated that moral support from the parents had proved 
important in helping the PBF and Kalyana Academy to take the first step. 
 
“The parents wanted to see their daughters take up boxing. If girls 
can play wrestling, kabaddi, martial arts, then why not boxing?” 
 
According to Kalyana Academy Boxing Programme Director and Karachi 
Boxing Association official Syed Ashraf Ali, the girls had shown 
interest to participate in the event after watching the boys train. 
 
“When they showed their interest, I told them that they would need at
 least a month’s training before coming in the ring with our coach 
Rafiullah. They took up the task. 
 
“Coming inside the ring is the biggest challenge. It’s about driving 
the fear away before performing in front of the spectators. I hope other
 academies and schools in the country can also take inspiration from 
this event,” said Ali.

“On May 22 during an interview on BBC Test Match Special, Paul 
Downton of the ECB made a series of comments about Kevin Pietersen with 
which Kevin takes issue, including the comments he made regarding his 
perception of Kevin’s attitude during the Sydney Test on last winter’s 
Ashes tour,” said an ECB statement issued late Friday.

“Some of those comments were made in breach of a settlement agreement
 between the ECB and Kevin Pietersen which was concluded at the time 
Kevin’s central contract was terminated earlier this year.

“Paul Downton and the ECB both apologise to Kevin Pietersen for those
 comments made that were in breach of the settlement agreement and have

At least 14 militants were killed when Pakistani border 
guards repelled a pre-dawn cross-border attack on a military post in the
 Warra Mamond tehsil of Bajaur Agency. Subsequently, the Afghan charge 
d’affaires was summoned to the Foreign Office to protest the raid.

“Dozens of heavily-armed militants sneaked into Bajaur from 
Afghanistan around 5am and attacked the military post in the Nao Top 
area, 25 kilometres northwest of the agency headquarters of Khar,” an 
official of the security forces told The Express Tribune.

One border guard was killed and two others were critically wounded in
 the attack, he added. Security personnel manning the post fended off 
the attackers and called for aerial support. Shortly afterwards, 
helicopter gunships were rushed to the area. Some 14 militants were 
killed in the retaliatory action, forcing the remaining to flee across 
the border.

The injured border guards were shifted to hospital before 
reinforcements were sent to the region to comb the area for more 
attackers, the security official said.

In a <a href="http://mofa.gov.pk/pr-details.php?prID=2005" target="_self">statement</a>,
 the Foreign Office put the number of attackers at 200-plus. “To repulse
 the terrorist attack, Pakistani troops responded with artillery and 
aviation support. Any allegations about shelling on Afghan civilians 
inside Afghanistan are incorrect. Pakistan aviation [forces] only fired 
on attacking terrorists,” it added.

An official of the local political administration said that security 
has been enhanced in the entire agency while tribal jirgas are being 
convened to seek support of the local tribesmen.

Islamabad formally lodged a protest with the Afghan charge d’affairs over the attack.

“A protest was lodged with the Afghan charge d’affaires and the 
matter was also taken up by our ambassador in Kabul with the Afghan 
foreign ministry,” said the Foreign Office statement.

“Pakistan’s concerns about miscreants and terrorists attacking from 
the other side of the border have been repeatedly shared with Afghan 
authorities. We hope effective steps will be taken to prevent recurrence
 of such incidents,” it added.

Earlier this month, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif had <a href="http://tribune.com.pk/story/710440/kabul-trip-coas-discussed-security-situation-in-afghanistan-with-ansf-chief/" target="_self">taken up the issue</a>
 during his talks with his Afghan counterpart Sher Muhammad Karimi and 
International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) Commander General Joseph 
Dunford in Kabul.

Bajaur Agency shares a border with Afghanistan’s northeastern 
province of Kunar, where Mullah Fazlullah-led Taliban fighters have been
 sheltering since they were routed in a massive military operation from 
the scenic valley of Swat in 2008. Since then, militants have been using
 Afghan soil as a springboard for mounting cross-border attacks on 
Pakistani posts.

Over in North Waziristan Agency, a tribal jirga warned that local 
tribesmen will migrate to neighbouring Afghanistan, if the government 
launched a military operation in the region. The warning came a day 
after a powerful Taliban commander, Hafiz Gul Bahadur, <a href="http://tribune.com.pk/story/715629/north-waziristan-taliban-prepare-for-war-amid-truce-breaking-claims/" target="_self">accused the government of reneging on a peace agreement</a> signed with his faction in 2007.

The Jirga was convened by Uthmanzai Wazir and Dawar tribes in the 
Darpa Khel Eidgah, Miramshah, the agency headquarters of North 
Waziristan.

Addressing the Jirga, Haji Sher Ali Khan, the successor of legendry 
Faqir of Api, said the Waziristan tribes have always voluntarily served 
as a bulwark against any aggression on Pakistan from western borders. 
“The Waziristan tribes don’t want war,” he said. “However, we have 
fought and will continue to fight ‘un-Islamic forces’ in the region.”

Another tribal elder, Malik Sher Wali Khan, said they would take up 
the issue of recurring curfews with the local political agent, 
provincial governor and federal government. “If they fail to normalise 
the situation, then we will migrate to Afghanistan,” he added. “This 
will be the only option for us, if the state fails to secure us.”

Malik Azmatullah Khan claimed that last week’s air strikes caused 
huge civilian casualties. “This kind of military intervention should 
stop,” he said, adding that tribesmen from several areas of North 
Waziristan, including Miramshah, Machis Camp, Darpa Khel and Mirali, 
continue to migrate to Afghanistan. “We are trying to stop the tribesmen
 but they continue to evacuate for fear of an impending military 
operation in the agency,” he added.

 US President Barack Obama said 
Saturday that an American soldier held for nearly half a decade in 
Afghanistan has been freed, in what officials indicated was a swap for 
five Guantanamo detainees.

“Today the American people are pleased that we will be able to 
welcome home Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, held captive for nearly five 
years,” said Obama, announcing the release of the army sergeant.

Bergdahl disappeared in June 2009 from a base in Afghanistan’s 
eastern Paktika province, with the Taliban later saying they had 
captured him.

The Idaho native was the only American soldier held captive by the militants.

“On behalf of the American people, I was honored to call his parents 
to express our joy that they can expect his safe return, mindful of 
their courage and sacrifice throughout this ordeal,” Obama said.

The US leader expressed his “deepest appreciation” to the Emir of 
Qatar “for his assistance in helping to secure our soldier’s return.”

“The Emir’s personal commitment to this effort is a testament to the partnership between our two countries,” he said.

Obama’s announcement came as Pentagon chief Chuck Hagel released a 
statement saying he had informed the US Congress of a decision to 
transfer five Guantanamo detainees to Qatar.

“The United States has coordinated closely with Qatar to ensure that 
security measures are in place and the national security of the United 
States will not be compromised,” Hagel said.

He also thanked the Emir of Qatar, praising him for his “instrumental role in facilitating the return of Sgt Bergdahl.”

Hagel said Bergdahl was “now under the care of the US military after being handed over by his captors in Afghanistan.”

A senior administration official confirmed that, “in connection” with
 Bergdahl’s return, the United States had transferred five Afghan 
Guantanamo detainees to Qatar.

“We have viewed Sgt Bergdahl’s release through diplomatic means as a 
vital goal in its own right because of our historic commitment to leave 
no soldier behind on the battlefield,” the official said.

Since his capture, Bergdahl has appeared in several Taliban videos.

In January, the United States obtained a “proof of life” video of the
 soldier — the first concrete evidence in more than three years that he 
was still alive.

In his statement, Obama said “Sergeant Bergdahl’s recovery is a 
reminder of America’s unwavering commitment to leave no man or woman in 
uniform behind on the battlefield.”

“And as we find relief in Bowe’s recovery, our thoughts and prayers 
are with those other Americans whose release we continue to pursue,” he 
added.

Secretary of State John Kerry meanwhile said he had spoken with Afghan President Hamid Karzai to brief him on the development.

After a military check post came 
under heavy attack from the Taliban in Bajaur early on Saturday, 
Pakistan lodged a formal complaint with Afghanistan.

According to a <a href="http://mofa.gov.pk/pr-details.php?prID=2005" target="_self">statement</a> from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pakistan summoned the Afghan Charge d’ Affairs in Islamabad and a protest was lodged.

The matter was also taken up by the Pakistan ambassador in Kabul who 
contacted the Afghan Foreign Ministry to complain about the issue.

The attack on the military post on Nao Top in Bajaur Agency had left 
one soldier dead and injured two others. As many as 14 Taliban were also
 killed as Pakistani forces repulsed the attack.

The statement further added that Pakistan troops responded with 
artillery and aviation support. However, any allegations about shelling 
on Afghan civilians inside Afghanistan were incorrect. “Pakistan 
aviation only fired on attacking terrorists,” the statement read.

“Pakistan’s concerns about miscreants attacking from the other side 
of the border have been repeatedly shared with Afghan authorities. We 
hope effective steps would be taken to prevent recurrence of such 
incidents”.

The statement added that Pakistan would continue to exercise 
restraint and make efforts to maintain conducive environment for 
constructive engagement.

“We remain committed to maintaining a tranquil border especially in the run-up to second round of Afghan elections.”

 US President Barack Obama will meet Ukrainian president-elect Petro Poroshenko in Poland on Wednesday, a US official said.

The meeting will take place during a trip by Obama, also including 
stops in Belgium and France designed to underscore the US security 
commitment to eastern Europe following Russia’s annexation of Crimea, 
said US Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes.

Obama will also meet a large group of central and eastern European 
leaders in Warsaw, where he will go to take part in the 25th anniversary
 celebrations of Poland’s first free post-communist elections.

In France, where he will travel for the 70th anniversary 
commemorations of the D-Day landings in Normandy, Obama will come 
face-to-face with Russian President Vladimir Putin, from whom he has 
been estranged over Moscow’s actions in Ukraine.

But there are no plans for Obama to hold a formal bilateral meeting with the Russian leader, Rhodes said.
